The bike's sprocket is screwed directly on to the hub and there is no freewheel mechanism. A reverse-thread locking ring is usually fitted onto the fixed gear bike to prevent the sprocket from unscrewing. Whenever the rear wheel is turning, the pedals of a fixed gear bike turn in the same direction. A rider can slow a fixed gear bike to a stop without the presence of brakes by resisting the rotation of the pedals. Fixed gear bikes can even be ridden in reverse.
