Hybrid bicycles taking on new meaning
Hybrid bicycles are taking on a new meaning as more "non-cyclists" seek to save money on alternative transportation. Originally a "hybrid bicycle" was simply a well-made bicycle that combined the rugged features of a good mountain bike with the speed of a solid road bike. People who bought and rode hybrids were looking for something useful on streets and roads which could also measure up to banging around on the occasional off-road trails.
That's still pretty much what cyclists are talking about when they speak of a hybrid bicycle. But the "newbies" who are coming to cycling for the first time, or back to the bicycles of their childhood, and looking for easy, cheap alternative transportation, may mean something entirely different by the term "hybrid" linked to bicycles. Very often, they are looking for a motor-assisted bicycle, i.e., those devilish mopeds!
Come on now, people, don't give up on "real" bicycles for motor assisted, often irritatingly noise mopeds, scooters, or -- ugh! -- pocketbikes. Find a quality hybrid bicycle designed for the streets and trails, and get out there and do "real" cycling. Your body will thank you for the improved fitness and better health that comes your way with real cycling!
